A Win for the Culture: Relient K Played ‘The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything’ Live in Minneapolis

If you tell Relient K to do anything they’ll just tell you: Well, you never know. Christian pop punk icons Relient K are currently traveling coast to coast on their Um Yeah Tour, playing a mix of new jams, classics and at least one Silly Song. Yes, during a show earlier this week in Minneapolis, in between songs about a girlfriend-eating Marilyn Manson and Sadie Hawkins Dances, Relient K squeezed in “The Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything” — a classic from the Veggie Tales canon. The song was played in answer to a Twitter request from podcaster Mason Mennenga. A good reminder to shoot your shot.

You can only hear a few seconds of the live cover above, but never fear. Relient K knows its way around this song, having contributed a cover of it to the Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything official movie soundtrack in 2007. Listen to the whole thing here. It’s awesome.

The song feels like a natural outgrowth of the band’s own vibe which, like Veggie Tales itself, is skilled at bouncing back and forth between goofball humor and spiritual pathos. The “Pirates Who Don’t Do Anything” might be a one-time number for the Minneapolis fans but they’ve got plenty of tour dates and a few tickets left, so why not check the show out? Silly Songs With Larry or no Silly Songs With Larry, you’re in for a great time.

And just in case you don’t know what any of this is about, here’s the original song. Absolute banger.
