Britney Spears: ‘I No Longer Believe in God’

Britney Spears is obviously on a journey. Everyone is. But Spears’ has been a little more unique, on account of being one of the world’s most famous people and a victim of what was allegedly a very difficult and abusive conservatorship. That journey has come with a lot of spiritual highs and lows, and now, this new twist: She says she no longer believes in God.

As noted by the Christian Post, in an audio recording posted to YouTube, Spears blamed her fraught relationship with her family for her change of heart. “God would not [allow] that to happen to me if God existed,” she says. “I don’t believe in God anymore because of the way my children and my family have treated me.”

“There is nothing to believe in anymore,” she determines. “I’m an atheist, y’all.”

In the past, she’s acknowledged that she “goes back and forth” on her religious beliefs. After being raised in a Southern Baptist home, Spears got very into Kabbalah like seemingly 99 percent of the rest of Hollywood in the early ’00s. She publicly disavowed Kabbalah and, last year, said she’d become a Catholic.

That happened around the same time her conservatorship started receiving mainstream media attention after several years of a grassroots effort to #FreeBritney. That effort was ultimately successful, and kicked off the latest era of her journey, which surely has many more twists and turns ahead. Hopefully she ends up stronger than yesterday.
