Let’s not lie to ourselves, sometimes Christmas music is awful.

It might be the lyrics, or maybe it’s the actual sound — whatever it is, some songs sound best when they’re played on mute. But that doesn’t mean that all Christmas music is bad. A lot of songs are pretty enjoyable, but only if the artist knows what to do with it.

We’ve compiled a few songs that debuted this year, from renditions of Christmas classics to brand new songs, that will surely be on repeat long past the holiday season.

Maverick City Music – “Mary Did You Know?”

It’s no surprise that the team that can turn any song into a hit can turn a Christmas classic into something even more spectacular. As part of A Very Maverick Christmas Special, Maverick City released their rendition of “Mary Did You Know?” and we can’t get enough of it.

Remi Wolf – “Winter Wonderland”

When you first hear Remi Wolf’s rendition of “Winter Wonderland,” it may take you a few seconds to recognize the song. Wolf has remixed the Christmas staple into something truly spectacular, and for the first time, well, ever, we actually want to put this song on repeat.

Future Islands – “Last Christmas”

Can you really celebrate the holiday without hearing “Last Christmas” at least once? The Christmas classic is everywhere at the holidays, but Future Islands gave it a fresh sound that makes it feel like you’re hearing it for the first time.

The 1975 – “Wintering”

“Wintering” is The 1975’s very first Christmas song, but we really hope it isn’t their last. The song showcases the band’s clever writing, providing a realistic snapshot into holidays with your family — the good, bad and quirky.

Phil Wickham – “Behold”

A majority of Christmas songs have been around for decades, but every now and then artists add their own song to the mix to freshen things up. Phil Wickham chose to go both routes, combining a beloved Christmas carol with modern worship lyrics. You can hear him talk all about it on the RELEVANT Podcast.

Rosie Thomas feat. Sufjan Stevens – “We Should Be Together”

Sufjan Stevens and Rosie Thomas are no strangers to Christmas music, so it was only inevitable that the two would team up to create the ultimate Christmas song. “We Should Be Together” is for anyone experiencing any mixed Christmas feelings, from feeling lonely at the holiday season to hoping for something better in the future.

Switchfoot – “California Christmas”

Christmas looks a little different for everyone, especially if you’re in a sunny place like California. Songs about winter wonderlands and snowy mornings don’t really hit the same, which is why Switchfoot’s “California Christmas” is perfect for anyone celebrating a warm winter this year.
