Marvin Sapp’s Tiny Desk Concert is One for the Ages

Gospel legend Marvin Sapp didn’t just perform at NPR’s Tiny Desk last week—he brought church with him. His electrifying, spirit-filled set turned the intimate space into a full-fledged worship experience, proving that even a desk can become a pulpit in the right hands.

Backed by a four-piece band and a six-piece choir, Sapp performed 11 songs spanning more than 30 years of his career—from his early days with the ’90s gospel group Commissioned to solo hits like “Never Would Have Made It.”

What set Sapp’s set apart wasn’t just his powerhouse vocals or decades of influence—it was his humility. NPR assistant producer Ashley Pointer shared that after the performance, Sapp took time to speak and pray with several members of the staff, “choosing ministry first, above all else.”
