The Maverick City ascendancy continues unabated, as the worship team is going to be performing at the music industry’s highest profile night. Alongside performances from the likes of Lil Nas X, Olivia Rodrigo, Jack Harlow, Billie Eilish and Silk Sonic, Mav City will bring a song of praise to the 2022 Grammys.
A press release calls it the first time in 20 years that a Gospel or Christian artist has performed at the Grammys which, well, depends on how you squeeze that balloon. In 2017, Chance the Rapper teamed up with Kirk Franklin for “How Great” — a cover of Chris Tomlin’s “How Great” — and that sure seems like a Christian performance. But we know what they mean. Brian McKnight, Al Green, Hezekiah Walker and Cece Winans performed a Gospel medley at the 2002 Grammys so yes, by the strictly technical definition, it’s been 20 years since there was a Gospel performance at the Grammys.
Between awards for Jubilee: Juneteenth Edition and Old Church Basement, Mav City is up for all four awards in the Christian and Gospel categories, a Grammys first. Good luck, gang!
The Grammys will air this Sunday at 8pm EST/7 CST on CBS.
