At last night’s MTV Video Music Awards, Orlando Bloom surprised everyone by introducing his partner, Katy Perry, by her given name — the same name she used as a Christian teen pop star in the 2000s.
“Give it up for our newest Video Vanguard, Katheryn Hudson,” Bloom said on stage, before adding, “Katy Perry!”
Bloom was on stage to present Perry with this year’s MTV Video Vanguard award.
“You fell in love with her as Katy Perry, I fell in love with her as Katheryn Hudson,” he said. “You know her as a global superstar who brings love, light and her unique sense of humor into every song she writes and every music video she creates. I know her as a mother, as a partner who brings that same sense of love and joy to our family.
And while the singer’s pop fans certainly know her as Katy Perry, CCM fans of a certain age will forever know her as Katy Hudson, the artist who released a self-titled Christian pop album in 2002. The album debuted to mostly positive reviews, and led to appearances on Christian TV channels.
Obviously, the artist later made a fairly big pivot in her career. But thankfully we’ll always have this grainy TBN performance. Long live Katy Hudson.
