Pharrell Williams got real about faith, purpose and the inspiring message his uncle shared with him in a viral clip of his Drink Champs appearance.
“God is the greatest,” Pharrell told hosts N.O.R.E. and DJ EFN in 2020. “What I was told today by my uncle—who’s a bishop—he said, ‘Your bad mistakes or your bad decisions or whatever it is that makes you human—God ain’t going to give up on His purpose for you.’”
The Grammy-winning artist spoke directly to anyone who feels disqualified by their past.
“Whatever God has for you, He’s going to see to it that that happens—’cause that’s for Him,” he said. “And whatever lessons that you have to endure because you’ve made bad decisions, that’s on you. But whatever He has for you—no man, no situation and not even the ill-informed or ill-instinct decisions that you make can get in the way of that.”
The moment caught some off guard—especially considering the show’s vibe—but Pharrell didn’t hesitate to acknowledge God’s presence in unexpected spaces.
“I know there’s alcohol in the room. I know there’s weed in the room. And there are people who are going to have judgments by me saying this,” he said. “But if you think God is only in the church…then you don’t understand what this world is. You don’t understand what this universe is. The universe is God, bro. We are inside God.”
The moment was a reminder that grace still shows up in unexpected places. Like in a cloud of smoke. Or in our own self-doubt. Or when we think we’ve messed it all up.
“Whatever God’s got for you—no man can get in the way of,” Pharrell said.
