Back in 2003, Finding Nemo was in theaters, gas was cheap, and Katy Perry was still going by Katy Hudson and dating Relient K frontman Matt Thiessen. It was also the era when she’d occasionally join the band on tour, which is how the internet ended up with a gloriously awkward clip of Perry jumping onstage during “Sadie Hawkins Dance” and attempting a stage dive that nearly went sideways almost immediately.
In the clip, Perry runs onstage, works up the courage for a stage dive and then almost backs out as she’s already in the air eats it. It’s awkward, fearless and extremely 2003.
