Snoop Dogg has announced his next album, and it’s not what you’d expect.
This Sunday, the rap icon will release Altar Call, a 21-track gospel album on Death Row Records. The project serves as a tribute to his late mother, Beverly Tate, and features an all-star lineup including Jamie Foxx, Robert Glasper, Jazze Pha, Denaun Porter, October London and more.
“April 27, I’m dropping a gospel album,” Snoop said in a video on Instagram. “God is good. Won’t he do it?”
The album’s cover features a photo of his mother, who passed away in 2021. At the time of her death, Snoop posted, “U taught me how to read and write, how to struggle and fight and all the facts of life. Now you finally got ya wings, mama.”
In a recent interview with Okayplayer, he said her presence is woven throughout the entire album.
“The spirit of my mother will forever live within me,” he said. “This album is a reflection of what she has taught me—to use my voice and my platform to spread love and heal the world.”
It’s not the first time Snoop has gone gospel. His 2018 album Bible of Love was a surprisingly sincere collection of faith-driven tracks featuring legends like Faith Evans and Charlie Wilson.
Snoop’s still one of hip-hop’s busiest legends—he and Dr. Dre just dropped their Missionary album in December—but with Altar Call, he’s making space for something different: grief, faith and a return to the music that shaped him.
