In 2012, flash mobs were a whole thing. You couldn’t go anywhere without a group of people pulling off some crazy stunt. Sometimes, these could be a little irritating. But sometimes — just sometimes — they could be rapturous.
This video, from Sabadell in Spain, is an example of the latter: a slowly building rendition of Beethoven’s “Ode to Joy,” which begins with a simple double bass and evolves into something wonderful featuring over 100 musicians.
Obviously, in pandemic season, this video feels piped in from another era, or possibly universe. But with vaccines rolling out, hopefully, the age of flash mobs are on their way back. Or, at least, good flash mobs.
