Watch Lauren Daigle Surprise an ‘American Idol’ Contestant at Her Audition

Grammy-award winning artist Lauren Daigle surprised a young Christian singer who was auditioning for this season of American Idol.

During the audition, Megan Danielle, a 20-year-old from Douglasville, Georgia, explained how her late grandfather encouraged her to become a Christian singer.

Danielle shared she previously sang in a band that played at bars and venues. But after a while, she felt uncomfortable playing in bars because she felt like she had to be someone else so people would like her music.

“There was one show I had one night, and my papa was there, and he pulled me to the side and said, ‘what are you doing baby?'” Danielle shared. “‘This isn’t what you’re supposed to be doing.’ He looked at me dead in the eye and said, ‘How can you sing for God and sing for this?’ And then I finally decided to totally switch to Christian music.”

Danielle then began singing “You Say,” not knowing that Daigle — who was on American Idol back in 2012 — was watching backstage the entire time.

After a few moments on her own, Daigle walked out to surprise Danielle.

“Oh my gosh! Only on American Idol! Insane,” judge Katy Perry said.

Daigle told Danielle that they had similar background stories and her grandfather, also named Chuck, had encouraged her own musical journey.

“Well, you know God has a sense of humor every once in a while,” Perry said.

Perry, who also got her start as a Christian singer before turning to pop music, asked the two to sing the song together again so she could “feel the spirit.”

And in case you’re wondering, Danielle made it to the next round in Hollywood.
