Good news C.S. Lewis fans: New Chronicles of Narnia movies are on the way. Netflix has inked a deal to make new films and “episodic programming” based on the influential fantasy series.
It’s not totally clear whether this means new movies, a TV series based on the books, or some combination of both. It’s possible that Netflix is looking for this to be their Game of Thrones (with considerably less nudity, probably) — a sweeping fantasy epic in which the few books can be effectively broken up into a television serialized format. But as recently as last year, there was word that Captain America: The First Avenger director Joe Johnston was working on a Silver Chair movie. That appears to no longer be the case, as these movies will be a full reboot — unconnected from the franchise that kicked off in 2005.
In a statement, C.S. Lewis’ stepson Douglas Gresham said, “It is wonderful to know that folks from all over are looking forward to seeing more of Narnia, and that the advances in production and distribution technology have made it possible for us to make Narnian adventures come to life all over the world. Netflix seems to be the very best medium with which to achieve this aim, and I am looking forward to working with them towards this goal.”
