A24 has a habit of making even the most mundane scenarios feel like an existential crisis (The Farewell, Everything Everywhere All At Once). Now, they’re applying that magic to Friendship, a movie that—despite what the ominous score and slow zooms suggest—is apparently just a comedy about two guys becoming pals.
The film stars Paul Rudd as a suburban everyman who cautiously befriends his eccentric new neighbor, played by I Think You Should Leave mastermind Tim Robinson. And if you’ve ever seen Robinson spiral into pure chaos over a hot dog costume or a haunted house tour, you already know: this man can turn any social interaction into a full-blown psychological breakdown.
The trailer plays it straight, leaning into thriller aesthetics—brooding stares, cryptic whispers and a level of tension usually reserved for movies where someone definitely gets murdered. But instead of a crime to solve, Friendship just asks: What if your neighbor wanted to be friends? Terrifying.
A24 hasn’t dropped many details beyond that, but honestly, that’s fine. Tim Robinson crashing out in Paul Rudd’s backyard is all the pitch we need.
Friendship hits theaters in May 2025.
