Paul Walker: 1973-2013

This weekend, actor Paul Walker was killed in a car accident when the sports car he was a passenger in crashed in California. The car’s driver Roger Rodas, a friend and business partner of Walker, was also killed. Authorities say speed was a factor in the accident.

Though he had starred in a number of Hollywood films, Walker is best known for his role in the Fast and Furious series—one of the most successful action franchises in recent box office history. Before he was killed on Saturday, Walker was leaving an event for a charity he founded, Reach Out Worldwide, which helps victims of natural disasters like the recent Typhoon Haiyan. In an interview with GQ UK, Walker said that growing up, he “went to a born-again Christian high school, was brought up in a traditional Mormon family,” both of which informed his values as a celebrity who was known for being charitable and down-to-earth. According to his IMDB profile, Walker described himself as a Christian, saying, “I’m a Christian now. The things that drove me crazy growing up was how everyone works at fault-finding with different religions. The people I don’t understand are atheists. I go surfing and snow boarding and I’m always around nature. I look at everything and think, ‘Who couldn’t believe there’s a God? Is all this a mistake?’ It just blows me away.” He was the father of a 15-year-old daughter.
