A new poll from the research group YouGov has found that millennials are lonelier than previous generations.
In fact, when asked about their own personal relationships the research found that 27 percent of millennials said they have no close friends. More than 20 percent said that they had no friends at all, and 30 percent said they don’t have a “best friend.”
The lack of close friendships has led to unprecedented rates of loneliness: 30 percent of millennials say “they always or often feel lonely” compared to just 20 percent of Gen Xers who say they feel that way and 15 percent of Baby Boomers.
As YouGov notes, one of the causes may be social media use. University of Pennsylvania psychologist Melissa G. Hunt explained to the outlet, “Here’s the bottom line: Using less social media than you normally would leads to significant decreases in both depression and loneliness.”
