Shein is Officially the Most Popular Brand in the World

Despite our best efforts, fast fashion is now a fixture of our society. Cheap clothes, fast-paced trends and social media have elevated fast fashion in our lives, and more specifically, it’s elevated Shein.

The controversial brand has officially been crowned at the world’s most popular brand of 2022.  The company was also crowned the most Googled clothing brand in 114 countries around the world.

To give you an idea of what the most popular brand looks like, in 2020 Shein made $10 billion in revenue in 2020 (its competitor stores like Asos only took in $4.4 billion that same year). Now, Shein is valued at $100 billion in 2022, making it the largest online-only fashion company.

Shein has a long, exhaustive like of controversies tied to its name. Countless fashion influencers have asked their followers to stop engaging with Shein after their designs were stolen. The company also inadvertently chemically poisoned customers with itsnail varnish. Workers in China have spoken out about the unfair conditions, including working 75-hour shifts with little time off.  And we won’t even get started on the improper pay for employees.

In spite of the controversies, however, Shein has grown at a rapid rate. The company has been around since 2008, but the last few years have catapulted it into the spotlight. As many were stuck at home with nothing to do, online shopping became a popular past time. And with Shein’s low, low prices, it became the place to shop for whatever you wanted.

Perhaps the success of Shein is less a celebration of its success and more of an insight into where we are as a society.
