Selena Gomez Opens Up About Her Bipolar Diagnosis in New Documentary

Selena Gomez sat down with Rolling Stone ahead of the release of her new documentary My Mind and Me, to speak candidly about the difficulties of her mental health diagnosis.

Gomez has battled with depression for a number of years and was diagnosed with a bipolar disorder back in 2018.

“Sometimes it was weeks I’d be in bed, to where even walking downstairs would get me out of breath,” Gomez shared. “I thought the world would be better if I wasn’t there.”

Gomez goes into detail about the months leading up to her bipolar diagnosis, saying she went into an episode of psychosis in early 2018. While she says she doesn’t remember much from that time period, she explained she was in treatment for several months due to her growing paranoia and difficulty trusting those around her.

As she was “walking out of psychosis,” Gomez was then diagnosed with bipolar disorder and prescribed several medications while doctors tried to figure out an appropriate cocktail.

However, Gomez shared the medication she does take for her bipolar disorder may ultimately prevent her from having children on her own. But she shares it is a “very big, big present thing in my life…if I’m meant to have them, I will.”

Gomez shares more about her mental health journey, including her battles with anxiety and depression, in Selena Gomez: My Mind and Me, streaming now on Apple TV+.
