At least 15 people were arrested at two different demonstrations in Minneapolis, where members of the Black Lives Matter movement protested the recent death of a local African-American man killed by police. Though the protests were peaceful, they caused parts of the area’s Mall of America to be shut down on one of the year’s busiest shopping days and caused delays at the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport.
Early in the day on Wednesday, hundreds of protestors marched on the Mall of America causing the temporary closure of numerous stores. From there, the protests moved to the airport, where they blocked access to a terminal. The demonstrators are attempting to bring attention to the case of Jamar Clark, a Minneapolis man who was shot by police responding a to a domestic violence call. Police say that Clark was shot because he attempted to interfere with paramedics assisting the female victim; several witnesses, however, claim Clark was handcuffed when police shot him in the head. The shooting is under investigation, though officials have refused to release video of the incident.
