Buckeye Baptism: 1,000 Students Gathered at Ohio State For Outdoor Service Led by Football Players

A group of students at The Ohio State University — including Buckeye football players TreVeyon Henderson, Emeka Egbuka and J.T. Tuimoloau — kicked off the new college semester in a faith-filled way.

The Lantern, Ohio State’s student newspaper, reported that the group of students led an outdoor service in the middle of campus on August 26 that attracted nearly 1,000 students. The football players shared their testimonies, others led worship, and near the stage four tubs of water were set up — which led to more than 60 students coming to faith and getting baptized.

Jeremy Westbrook, the executive director-treasurer of the State Convention of Baptists in Ohio, shared his excitement on X.

“Witnessed the ‘Invitation to Jesus’ in person last night led by several players from @OhioStateFB team,” Westbrook posted. “Over 60 students stood to profess Christ & follow in baptism!! Had the joy of passing out hundreds of Bibles to those who desired to read who Jesus really is!! Let’s go!!”

This isn’t an isolated event—college campuses across the U.S. are increasingly becoming hubs for similar spiritual movements. Over the last year, several colleges across the country, such as Auburn University and the University of Georgia, have hosted similar gatherings, with faith leaders like Jennie Allen and Jonathan Pokluda helping baptize students.

“It was so sincere, so simple, so pure,” Allen told RELEVANT about the Auburn event last spring. “These students just want God, and I think it’s because they’ve tasted the world and it has not met their needs.”
