Cleveland Browns linebacker Carson Schwesinger was baptized Sunday during a citywide worship event called “Cleveland for Christ.”
Held at Berea Municipal Pool outside Cleveland, the gathering featured worship, prayer, testimonies and baptisms. Browns running back Raheim Sanders was also baptized during the event, while several other teammates — including quarterback Shedeur Sanders and defensive tackle Mason Graham — were among those in attendance.
Organized by Metro Cleveland FCA, the event was led by Browns chaplain Nobles Darby along with safety Daniel Thomas and cornerback Tyson Campbell.
“We want the whole community to come out — the athletes to come out, everybody to come out — and just see what Jesus is gonna do,” Thomas said in a video promoting the event.
For Schwesinger, the baptism is a public expression of a faith he’s referenced before, even if he hasn’t often spoken about it publicly.
Earlier this year, reflecting on his journey from walk-on linebacker at UCLA to NFL draft pick, Schwesinger said the experience taught him to keep football in perspective.
“One of the things I learned throughout this process, which is really comforting, is that God does not care how good I am at football,” he said. “No matter what I do on the field, He’s more concerned with how I treat people, the person I am and how I show Him to others around me.”
