This weekend, Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold shared on Instagram that he got baptized, calling it “the most important step in life.”
In a lengthy caption, Arnold wrote that he was baptized after wrestling with weeks of “feeling empty” and “not myself.”
“As I sat down and talked to [pastor and author] Jason Wilson, he asked me when I came to know Christ as my Lord and Savior, and I told him I couldn’t remember, but I did it when I was a kid,” Arnold wrote. “At that point in my life, I was young and trying to do the right thing, but I simply just didn’t have the understanding of it.”
The 21-year-old said the conversation pushed him to recognize his need for a deeper commitment.
“Yesterday Jesus called me, and I answered that call. The void that I was feeling the past few weeks and the emptiness I felt were lifted, and I gave all my burdens to him,” he wrote.
Arnold leaned on both Scripture and football to explain the moment.
“Remember, salvation isn’t about performance—it’s about your position,” he wrote, citing Ephesians 2:8-9. “In Christ, salvation has positioned you in Him—secure, forgiven and loved—not because of your stats in life or on the field, but because of His sacrifice.”
The NFL player also tied it back to his role on the field.
“As a cornerback, you can’t chase applause, play in fear or dwell on mistakes—you have to live freely in the moment,” he wrote. “If you get burned on one play but keep looking back at the crowd, the scoreboard and the sidelines—the next play will defeat you too.”
He closed by pointing to a new confidence in his faith.
“In Christ, you don’t have to chase attention or approval anymore—not from fans, not from coaches and not even from family. You already have the Father’s approval through the sacrifice of Yahushua.”
