Detroit Pistons Star Jaden Ivey Says He Finds His Identity In Christ, Not the Game

Detroit Pistons guard Jaden Ivey recently shared his powerful faith journey on The Walk Podcast, opening up about the struggles, surrender and ultimate peace he found in Christ.

“I felt no peace,” Ivey admitted. “I felt like I had to do so much for God, and every time I fell short, it was like, ‘Dang, I’m back to square one. I’m just a filthy sinner, and like, how is God gonna forgive this?’”

For years, Ivey wrestled with the pressure of measuring up, but everything changed during a trip to Denver.

“I remember the day where I gave my life to Christ, and it was in Denver, Colorado,” he recalled. “I sat in the room, and I was just like, ‘Jesus, I just give my life to you. I’m done.’ I knew— I knew He was always there.”

In that moment, he fully surrendered, recalling the scripture, “Every knee will bow, and every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord.”

While basketball has brought him incredible moments of joy, Ivey understands that it’s fleeting.

“When I’m on the court, I feel a joy. It’s so amazing to use the gifts that God gave me and to go out there and use the speed that He gave me, the force, just even the mental capacity to execute game plans. Like, He gave me all that. But it’s a different type of joy. And I know when the game is done, it’s over with, and this whole world is temporary. So it’s only temporary joy.”

That’s why Ivey holds on to something deeper—something that doesn’t fade with wins or losses.

“When you have a peace that never leaves you, when you rest in His grace, and you realize, you understand what He did for you—it’s a peace that surpasses all understanding, as it says in the Bible,” he said.
