Venezuela’s Stunning WBC Win was One of the Most Faith-filled in Sports History

Venezuela won its first World Baseball Classic title Tuesday night, and third baseman Eugenio Suárez gave glory to God before the celebration had barely started.

After delivering game-winning double in a 3-2 win over Team USA, Suárez looked to the sky and started praying on the field.

Speaking to reporters after the game, he quickly put his faith front and center.

“God is good,” told Fox Sports. “All the glory is for the Lord Jesus. He was with us the whole time. We have to glorify [Him], put His name in front of everything.”

It fit the way Venezuela had carried itself throughout the tournament. Before each game, the team came together in prayer, including before the championship. After the final out, Suárez led teammates in prayer again on the field as they celebrated their first-ever World Baseball Classic win with Venezuelan flags draped over their shoulders.

Throughout the tournament, Suárez made it clear the moment wasn’t just about the game.

“I never thought in my life that I’d get to represent my country and do it in front of this crowd here in Miami,” he told MLB Network earlier in the tournament. “I feel so happy for how special God has been to me. This is beautiful. You have to glorify Jesus’ name and do all my best on the field so [the fans] can feel proud of us.”
