Patriots Rookie TreVeyon Henderson Highlights Nigeria’s Persecuted Christians With His Game-Day Cleats

When most players step into the NFL’s My Cause My Cleats week, they represent a nonprofit or promote a foundation. TreVeyon Henderson stepped in with something heavier on his heart: persecuted Christians in Nigeria.

The Patriots rookie designed his cleats to call for prayers for believers facing violence across Nigeria. The country has become one of the most dangerous places in the world to be a Christian, with human rights groups estimating more than 52,000 believers have been killed since 2009.

“It’s so easy to just bypass that,” Henderson said. “But difficult to bypass when you realize these are brothers and sisters actually losing their lives.”

Nigeria remains one of the deadliest places in the world to follow Jesus, with extremist groups targeting Christian communities, torching homes and displacing families. It is a crisis that rarely breaks into mainstream coverage. Henderson figured if millions were going to be watching his feet this weekend, they might as well see something that matters.

His awareness started small — a teammate shared a social post about the crisis that would not leave his mind. He dug deeper into the story, learning about real people clinging to real faith under pressure.

“They’re living out the Bible,” he said. “Jesus says those who desire to follow me must take up their cross. They’re staying faithful. It encourages me to be courageous, to be bold.”

Henderson knows the cost for following Jesus looks different for him. In the United States, the backlash might be a negative comment. In Nigeria, the cost is often everything. It is why he wanted his cleats to do more than look good. They needed to point somewhere.

My Cause My Cleats has become a place where players tell the stories that matter most to them. Henderson used his moment to invite fans into a global family many do not realize they are connected to.

“I hope it encourages us all to remain faithful, to be more courageous, to be more bold,” he said.
