
Following an international uproar, Sudanese officials announced the release of 27-year-old Meriam Ibrahim from death row, where she’d been sentenced for refusing to renounce her Christian faith. Ibrahim was imprisoned last month along with her 2-year-old son, and gave birth to another child while in custody, where she was condemned to 100 lashes and hanging for apostasy. But over the weekend, the voices of high-profile officials like Hillary Clinton, Tony Blair, Jesse Jackson and the archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby seemed to succeed in changing officials’ minds. Sudanese state news agency Suna said: “The appeal court ordered the release of [Ibrahim] and the cancellation of the [earlier] court ruling.”
However, there has been no sign of Ibrahim, her children or her husband at the couple’s home. The Guardian reports that Ibhrahim’s legal team say they have moved the family to a safehouse to protect them from radicals who may attempt to carry out the state’s sentence without government oversight …
