A New Feature on Instagram Will Let You Reset Your Algorithm

Raise your hand if your Instagram feed feels like a chaotic garage sale of dance tutorials, random food hacks and posts from that one high school acquaintance you keep meaning to unfollow. Well, Instagram might finally have a fix for you.

On Tuesday, Instagram announced a new feature that allows users to hit a “fresh start” on their recommendations. With just a few taps, you can wipe the slate clean on the content in Explore, Reels and your Feed. Here’s how to do it:

Here’s how to go about it:

  • Once the feature is available, you can head to your “Settings” page and find the new “Content Preferences or Suggested Content” option.
  • Select “Reset Content Suggestion.”
  • Review the people you follow and your ad topics, then select “Reset suggested content.”

The feature lets you review your followed accounts and unfollow ones you’ve outgrown. But there is one catch: once you reset, there’s no going back — your feed gets a full reboot, and recommendations will adjust over time based on what you engage with. So think twice before you go for a full refresh.

This update builds on Instagram’s existing tools to help users customize their feeds and follows mounting pressure for Meta to create a safer, more user-friendly experience. Teens, in particular, are the focus of this new rollout, following recent lawsuits and scrutiny from Congress over how social media impacts mental health.

And while this feature is clearly aimed at smoothing over concerns from parents and lawmakers, it’s a win for anyone tired of the algorithm missing the mark.
