An unopened, first generation iPhone has sold at an auction for more than 50 times its original price.
The 15-year-old device started off with a bid of $2,800, and auctioneers expected it to end up around $30,000. To their surprise, the small device sold for a whopping $39,000.
The iPhone was in its original packaging from Apple, and it still had the headphone jack, home button and large borders around its tiny 3.5-inch display. There was no front-facing ‘selfie’ camera and only a single lens on the back. The good old days.
The auction house described the iPhone as “one of the most important and ubiquitous inventions of our lifetime.” When the iPhone dropped back in 2007, no one could have guessed how a handheld device would change the trajectory of the world. In less than two decades, the iPhone has revolutionized the way we communicate with media and one another.
