Netflix has long been known for its television and film content, but soon the company hopes they’ll be known for their gaming content, too.
The company announced they would be releasing 40 new games by the end of the year, adding to the 55 games they’ve already released. In other news, Netflix has released 55 games.
Let’s back up. In November 2021, the company announced Netflix Games as “a new way to experience entertainment.”
“Whether you’re craving a casual game you can start from scratch or an immersive experience that lets you dig deeper into your favorite stories, we want to begin to build a library of games that offers something for everyone,” the company wrote. “We’re in the early days of creating a great gaming experience, and we’re excited to take you on this journey with us.”
Since then, Netflix has released mobile games like “Stranger things: 1984” and RPGs like “Too Hot to Handle.” But they’ve also developed games that have nothing to do with their streaming content, like “Highwater,” which released earlier this month and is an RPG set in a dystopian future on a flooded planet in which players must try to board a rocket to Mars to escape the climate catastrophe.
Although the current games are mobile-only, Netflix is planning to develop a cloud gaming offering that will allow players to access games on any of their Netflix devices. The overall vision, according to Loombe, is to make sure that there is a “game on Netflix for every member.”
That all sounds nice, but considering it took a year and a half for most people to find out about these games, we’re not holding our breath anytime soon for a game revolution.
