Next week, lawmakers in Alabama will decide on a new law that would make it illegal to sell either a phone or an “internet access device” that doesn’t automatically filter porn.
If the owner of the device wants to have the porn filter removed, they have to go through two steps: Pay a $20 fee, and then make the request in writing.
If the law goes through, anyone caught selling a phone, tablet or computer that doesn’t block porn could face a year in jail. If that device is sold to a minor, the seller could go to prison for 10 years.
Critics of the measure say it could restrict free speech.
