TikTok Is Considering a New Paywall Feature

Welp, it was fun while it lasted.

In an effort to boost usage and expand its audience, TikTok is reportedly developing several new features, including a paywall for creators to set a price on their content. That’s right, you could soon be paying to watch a 15-second video of someone badly dancing to the latest hit.

The paywall feature is not entirely unexpected. Instagram has already experimented with similar exclusive content for paying fans. And as relatable as TikTok stars seem, we have to remember that they are, in fact, content creators who probably deserve some cash for their work.

TikTok is also reportedly testing a revamped creator fund that pays creators for popular videos. Many have criticized the original fund, saying it limits how much content creators can earn.

The original fund, which launched back in 2020, was a three-year, $1 billion pool of money that paid creators for popular videos. However, many TikTokers have argued they only earn a few dollars for videos with millions of views.

With the new fund, the goal is to pay out more to creators than the original version. TikTok has not yet revealed how they plan to do that, but it appears that a paywall could be one of many steps in their solution.
