We love what the past 15 years or so have done for zombie flicks. The Day of the Dead-style classics are doubtless great movies, but Shaun of the Dead and Zombieland have made the horror subgenre feel as fun as it should, and now comes The Dead Don’t Die to keep the high jinks going.
Starring Bill Murray (who had a hilarious cameo in Zombieland, remember) alongside Adam Driver (keeping up a string of cop roles after BlacKkKlansman), Tilda Swinton and Tilda Swinton’s katana, The Dead Don’t Die is treating the whole walking dead thing with a welcome amount of levity and laughs.
trailer is a goodie-basket of fun. Iggy Pop plays a zombie. Adam Driver says the word “ghouls” with the utmost seriousness. Tilda Swinton swings Tilda Swinton’s katana around. Selena Gomez (!) gives some attitude. There’s all manner of twangy guitars and pounding bass and slotchy title cards. This makes a scary movie feel fun instead of freaky.
The Dead Don’t Die comes out June 14. We’d take it tomorrow.
