Look, we have to be pretty honest here: The Hobbit movies don’t hold up. Lord of the Rings is of course immortal and incredible and we’ll preserve them in a vault so our great-great-grandkids can be awed by them in (*does crude math) 2100 or whatever.
Thankfully, That ’70s Show actor Topher Grace agrees with us, but instead of condemning the movies to the depths of cinema doom, he’s edited the over-stuffed, over-inflated trilogy into a single two-hour movie. That sounds awesome for our money, considering the brevity of Tolkien’s book in relation to the over six hours of movie we received in Peter Jackson’s edition. (h/t AV Club)
Grace is no stranger to re-editing things people don’t like. He did an 85-minute cut of all the Star Wars prequel films called Star Wars: Episode III.5: The Editor Strikes Back. It was released to pretty solid reception, so when this new Hobbit movie comes out, you can bet we’ll give it a spin on a weekend.
