Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse wasn’t just the best superhero movie of 2018, or even the best animated movie. It was on the shortlist of best movies, period. That’s why we’re pumped that Phil Lord and Christopher Miller are back on another animated flick, this one directed by Gravity Falls‘ Mike Rianda. It looks like a hoot.
Connected follows a family’s wild road trip to drop their eldest daughter off at college, and all manner of hijinks ensue. The trailer is terrific. Just watch it!
The all-star voice cast is a lot of fun too. The oldest daughter Katie is voiced by Broad City‘s Abbi Jacobsen, and that’s Danny McBride as her father and Maya Rudolph as the mom. Also, there are robots? Great. There are robots!
But the extra fun details are all the tiny innovations in animation that play with form and substance in addition to style, really stretching the idea of how you can tell a story with animation. Also, the pug, of course.
