A New Conan the Barbarian Series Is Headed to Netflix

What is best in life? If you’re Netflix, that’s an easy one: milkable intellectual property. If you’re Conan the Barbarian, it’s also easy: to crush your enemies. Now we can crush two birds with one stone, if this new report from Deadline is true. It sounds like Conan the Barbarian will live again on Netflix, possibly in both live-action and animated varietals.

Conan’s first appearance was where a lot of adaptations these days come from: comic books. The Barbarian has actually had a comic series since the 1930s, which has been adapted for film and TV a number of times including, most famously, as an Arnold Schwarzenegger vehicle. There’ve been a few other attempts at a reboot, most recently with Jason Momoa, but none have been particularly successful. Still, a solid pulp-y fantasy idea has obvious potential, given the near-century of backstory to pull from.

Currently, Conan’s adventures are being published by Marvel Comics which means that, yep, via some interdimensional jaywalking shenanigans, Conan is mixing it up with the X-Men, the Avengers and the rest. There’s no reason to think he’ll be making an appearance in the MCU anytime soon but, well, one can dream. There’s no word on casting but given their success with The Witcher, it’s no surprise that the streaming giant is on the hunt for more sword-and-sandals epics.
