Elizabeth Holmes had a great idea, a solid business plan and a collection of wealthy people only too happy to invest. The only thing she didn’t have was a working product, but that was a detail she was willing to play fast and loose with until Theranos finally caught up with her. It’s a wild story, and Hulu is just one of several places determined to adapt it for the screen.
Amanda Seyfried is Holmes in a cast that also includes Utkarsh Ambudkar, Kate Burton, Michel Gill, LisaGay Hamilton, William H. Macy, Elizabeth Marvel, Laurie Metcalf, Dylan Minnette, Alan Ruck, Sam Waterston and Michaela Watkins. (Adam McKay is working on a film adaptation with Jennifer Lawrence in the title role).
Seyfried nails Holmes’ determined pluck and slightly uncanny vocal affect (critics say she deliberately lowered her voice in public), and you can believe both her desperation to win the approval of her peers and her shaky ethical center. It remains to be seen whether her performance is impression, imitation or possession, but it should be interesting to watch. The series premieres on March 3.
