The Curse is sounding more and more like one of the most promising new shows on the horizon, featuring a cast and talent that most highbrow movies would kill for. Emma Stone has joined awkward comedy all-timer Nathan Fielder for the show, which is being helmed the Safdie brothers. The Safdies are coming off 2019’s incredible Adam Sandler vehicle Uncut Gems, and television isn’t necessarily the obvious next move for them but when you’ve got talents of Fielder and Stone’s caliber on board, pretty much anything goes.
So here’s the premise: “a genre-bending scripted comedy that explores how an alleged curse disturbs the relationship of a newly married couple as they try to conceive a child while co-starring on their problematic new HGTV show.” Well, that certainly has potential.
Fielder is the mind behind Comedy Central’s Nathan For You, which is a little like Punk’d meets Shark Tank with a dash of Napoleon Dynamite, a reality series in which Fielder posed as a terminally awkward consultant trying to sell struggling business owners on increasingly outlandish ideas. He created The Curse with Benny Safdie, who co-starred with Rob Pattinson in the Safdies’ nail-biter Good Time.
The series is headed to Showtime. We don’t know much more than that for now but this is one to keep an eye on.
