John Mulaney is getting his own live talk show on Netflix, set to debut in early 2025.
The streaming platform announced plans for the weekly variety show today, with Netflix’s chief content officer Bela Bajaria describing the show as bold, fresh and perfectly suited to Mulaney’s unpredictable comedic style.
“We’ve had a long relationship with John, and his live show ‘Everybody’s in LA’ last year was a great test,” Bajaria said. “He’s wildly talented and creative, and I think it’ll be really fun to bring that energy to a live weekly show.”
Netflix hasn’t had the easiest time with talk shows in the past (remember Hasan Minhaj’s short-lived Patriot Act?), but they’re not shying away from trying something new. Bajaria admits the space has been tricky but the streaming giant is committed to trying something new.
As for the details of Mulaney’s new show? Those are still under wraps, but we do know he’ll be pulling triple duty as host, co-showrunner and executive producer. If his past Netflix specials — like Baby J and The Sack Lunch Bunch — and previous hosting gigs are anything to go by, it’s bound to be a blend of sharp humor, quirky guests and a whole lot of fun.
Netflix’s dive into live programming is ramping up, with live sports and events like Chestnut vs. Kobayashi: Unfinished Beef and even the “Roast of Tom Brady” already on their roster. The Mulaney show is just the latest in their bid to shake things up.
