Julie Bowen Will Star in a New Series About the 1980s Satanic Panic

Modern Family actress Julie Bowen will star in Peacock’s new thriller series, Hysteria!, a show that will explore America’s mass hysteria surrounding the “Satanic Panic” of the late 1980s.

The series will follow a group of teenage misfits exploiting the growing fear of occult activity in their small Midwestern town.

Bowen will play the role of Linda Campbell, a mother of a teenage outcast who witnesses supernatural disturbances that force her to question everything she knows about her son.

“When a beloved varsity quarterback disappears during the ‘Satanic Panic’ of the late 1980s, a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts realize they can capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by building a reputation as a Satanic metal band, until a bizarre series of murders, kidnappings and reported ‘supernatural activity’ triggers a leather-studded witch hunt that leads directly back to them,” the logline reads.

The Satanic Panic trend died off in the mid ’90s. But in 2021, online users speculated that Satanism was on the rise following the tragic events at Travis Scott’s Astroworld festival. And just last summer, Satanic Panic was trending on Twitter following the fourth season of Stranger Things.
