We’re big fans of Rian Johnson around here. We’re also big fans of Natasha Lyonne, but that probably goes without saying. Johnson’s got stuff like Knives Out and The Last Jedi to his name, while Lyonne is prepping for season two of her fantastic Russian Doll series on Netflix. It stands to reason that anything those two cook up together will be interesting, and now, we’ll get a chance to find out.
Johnson has cast Lyonne as the star of Poker Face, a new TV series he’s creating that will follow the tried-and-true “case of the week” mystery format. Think Murder She Wrote, Columbo and stuff like that. It’ll be on NBC’s fledgling streaming service Peacock and will have ten episodes and if you want to know more, you’ll just have to wait and see. Johnson’s played pretty coy with details, saying only that “I’m very excited to dig into the type of fun, character driven, case-of-the-week mystery goodness I grew up watching. It’s my happy place.”
“Having Natasha as a partner in crime is a dream, and we’ve found the perfect home at Peacock,” he continued.
OK. So, Johnson’s working on a serialized mystery situation, which tracks with the Agatha Christie-aping Knives Out energy that he brought to the screen in 2019. And Russian Doll also unpacked its own scifi strangeness like a mystery, so we’ve got two pros on the case. And hey, when you’ve got two talents this interesting in the mix, that’s all we need to get excited.
