Netflix Is Turning John Steinbeck’s Cain and Abel-Inspired ‘East of Eden’ Into a Limited Series

Netflix has released the first trailer East of Eden, its upcoming limited series adaptation of John Steinbeck’s classic novel.

If you slept through your high school English class, the story follows the Trask family, whose complicated generational drama draws heavily from the biblical story of Cain and Abel. Steinbeck uses that framework to explore jealousy, guilt, forgiveness and whether people are bound by the sins they inherit or capable of choosing a different way forward.

Florence Pugh stars as Cathy Ames, with Christopher Abbott as Adam Trask, Mike Faist as Charles Trask, Hoon Lee as Lee, Ciarán Hinds as Samuel Hamilton, Joseph Zada as Cal Trask and Joe Anders as Aron Trask. Pugh is also an executive producer.

The series was created by Zoe Kazan (The Big Sick), whose grandfather, Elia Kazan, directed the 1955 film version starring James Dean.

“In the process of bringing this family saga to life, the resonance of my own familial connection to the material has not been lost on me,” Kazan previously shared in a statement when production kicked off in New Zealand in late 2024. “But it is Steinbeck’s writing — personal, shocking, profound, and free — that has kept me enthralled by East of Eden since I first read the book as a young teen.”

The seven-episode series is set to premiere in fall 2026.
