Nothing Seems Quite Real in the Weird First Trailer for Marvel’s ‘WandaVision’

The Marvel machine has tried their hand at TV before, with ABC’s Agents of SHIELD and Agent Carter shows, along with Netflix’s series like Daredevil, Jessica Jones and Luke Cage, but Disney+ upcoming Marvel series are promising far more direct lines to the movies themselves, featuring spinoff adventures with a-list Avengers like Hawkeye, Falcon & the Winter Soldier, Loki and, first up, WandaVision. The latter will star Elizabeth Olsen and Paul Bettany as The Scarlet Witch and Vision, whose star crossed path met a tragic fate towards the end of Avengers: Infinity War.

Or did it? Nothing seems quite real in the deliciously weird, Pleasantville-inspired first trailer for the series, which skips across various eras of television in a way that may mirror a fracturing mind, a power set on the fritz or the unfortunate consequences of tampering with the fabric of reality. In the comics, Olsen’s Wanda has been the source of a few galactic headaches, in which her vast, reality warping powers went awry. This series also looks to be drawing from Tom King’s excellent, award-winning The Vision series, in which Vision tries to fit into suburbia with disastrous results. Whatever the actual story here, with a terrific supporting cast featuring players like Randall Park (reprising his Ant-Man role), Kat Dennings (reprising her Thor role) and Karthryn Hahn (in a mysterious “Nosy Neighbor” role), this will be one to watch.

The release date remains under wraps for now.
