South Park is taking a break until 2025, as creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have decided to hit pause on the show rather than dive into another presidential election cycle featuring Donald Trump.
The reason? The duo, known for their sharp cultural commentary, say they’re tired of the election madness that’s dominated past seasons.
“We’ve tried to do South Park through four or five presidential elections, and it is such a mind scramble,” Stone told Vanity Fair. He added that while the election is “obviously f—ing important,” it tends to overshadow everything else, making the process less enjoyable. Parker echoed, saying, “We don’t know what more we could possibly say about Trump.”
The creators have previously satirized U.S. politics ad nausem by turning Mr. Garrison into a Trump-like figure for several seasons. But with Trump set to face Vice President Kamala Harris in 2024, Parker and Stone are opting for a hiatus.
However, there could be another reason for the delay. Stone commented to Vanity Fair that the duo was waiting for Paramount+ to “figure all their s— out,” but he didn’t expand on what exactly that meant.
For now, the May 2024 special, “South Park: The End of Obesity,” which premiered on Paramount+ and explores the impact of new weight loss drugs, is the only new content fans can expect this year. The show’s last full season ended in March 2023, and with Parker and Stone taking a step back, it seems even they need a break from the political circus.
