That ’90s Show’s Viewership Destroys Other Streaming Revivals

Viewership numbers for the premiere of the That ‘90s Show are in, and they crushed the numbers of other recent reboots, including Gossip Girl and How I Met Your Father. 1.7 million households in the U.S. watched Episode 1 of the That ‘70s Show spinoff on Netflix in the first three days since its release.

But the question we have is, who’s actually watching it? Only 12 percent of the viewing audience ranged from ages 25 to 44 (the primary audience of the original).

“Nearly two decades after the final episode of That ’70s Show aired, it’s clear we are ready to return to the Forman’s basement as Netflix taps into another piece of reboot magic with That ’90s Show,” said Cole Strain, VP of Measurement Products at data analytics firm Samba TV.

“The premiere outpaced nearly every other recent reprise airing on other streamers drawing in more than 3x the audience of Peacock’s Bel-Air, 4x the audience of HBO Max’s Gossip Girl and 6x the audience of Hulu’s How I Met Your Father. Not surprisingly, millennials who grew up in the era of the original show were more likely to watch than the average U.S. household.”

(Okay, we know that spin about millennials isn’t true! Eighty-eight percent of the viewers weren’t millennials. But we digress.)

That ’90s Show brings the audience back to Point Place, WI, with a new ensemble cast of teenagers joining Debra Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith, who played Kitty and Red Forman and are also executive producers of the reboot.

Callie Haverda stars as Leia Forman, the daughter of Eric and Donna, who will be spending the summer in Point Place with her grandparents. The cast of newcomers includes Ashley Aufderheide as Gwen; Mace Coronel as Jay Kelso; Maxwell Acee Donovan as Nate; Reyn Doi as Ozzie; and Sam Morelos as Nikki.

Five of the six prominent cast members from That ’70s Show returned as guest stars.

That ’90s Show is now streaming on Netflix.
