Long before Ben Kenobi offered to take a wayward youth back to his aunt and uncle out on Tatooine, Obi-Wan was keeping tabs on Luke Skywalker, the last hope of a galaxy far, far away. Now, Disney+ is ready to break down just what happened between the final moments of Revenge of the Sith and the opening crawl of A New Hope with their new Obi-Wan Kenobi series.
Ewan MacGregor is back in the role and whatever your feelings on the prequels, nobody can argue that MacGregor isn’t a slam dunk for the job. Something of an unknown back when The Phantom Menace dropped, MacGregor has aged into one of the most reliably solid actors of his generation, and he more than deserves another shot at portraying the past/future mentor to Young Master Skywalker.
He’ll be joined by Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse as Uncle Owen and Aunt Beru, and a collection of exciting actors like Kumail Nanjiani, O’Shea Jackson Jr. and Benny Sadie. Fans of Star Wars have reason to be excited. Fans of Disney’s attempts at episodic storytelling should also be thrilled. There’s not a lot to glean from this teaser but we do get a little “Duel of the Fates” and a look at how things are going back on, yes, once again, Tatooine. Hopefully this series will send our hero out to some other, new planets and capture a little of that classic Star Wars “anything is possible” energy.
