The New Season of ‘Shiny Happy People’ Explores the Rise and Fall of Teen Mania

Season two of Shiny Happy People, titled A Teenage Holy War, is now streaming on Prime Video—and this time, it’s trading the Duggar family for another Christian institution: Teen Mania Ministries.

If you were part of a youth group in the 2000s, you probably remember the hype: massive Acquire the Fire stadium events, emotional altar calls, spiritual “boot camps” and mission trips that felt more like Christian basic training. Teen Mania promised to “raise an army of young people to change the world.” What it delivered, according to some former members, was something far more intense.

The new season investigates the rise and fall of the once-dominant ministry founded by Ron and Katie Luce in 1986. At its height, Teen Mania reached millions of teens across the U.S. with slick productions and high-pressure discipleship programs like the Honor Academy. But behind the scenes were reports of psychological manipulation, authoritarian leadership and a toxic culture that ultimately led to the organization’s bankruptcy and closure in 2015.

Following the same investigative format that exposed the darker side of IBLP in season one, this season features interviews with former Teen Mania interns and insiders, shedding light on a culture of spiritual coercion masked as youthful passion.

All three episodes of Shiny Happy People: A Teenage Holy War are now streaming on Prime Video.
