Saturday Night Live gave millennials an early Christmas present this weekend.
The show reunited Kenan Thompson with his previous partner-in-crime, Kel Mitchell, and host Keke Palmer in a hilarious sketch titled Kenan and Kelly, a “gritty reboot” of the ’90s sitcom Kenan and Kel.
In the skit, Palmer pitches the reboot idea to Thompson, who agreed because he “thought it was gonna be a Jordan Peele-produced streaming series.” The sketch is a perfect send-up of the original — featuring everything from Thompson’s signature dreads and affinity for orange soda, to the familiar slapstick humor and campy catchphrases.
The twist comes from Palmer’s ambitions to use the reboot to win her an Emmy, which takes the beloved sitcom in an unexpectedly dark direction. (“Uh-oh, here comes the bus!”)
It’s been almost 30 years since we last saw our favorite Good Burger employees working together, and despite going down wildly different paths — Thompson has become SNL’s longest-running cast member while Mitchell spends his time acting and working as a youth pastor — the duo reminded us what the comedy of our youth looks like. Well, when updated with Palmer’s dramatic overlay.
