Tyler Perry Has Trademarked “What Would Jesus Do?”

We live in interesting times. Tyler Perry just successfully snagged the trademark for “What Would Jesus Do?” Surprisingly enough, he actually won the trademark away from Kimberly Kearney, a reality “star” from some show called I Want to Work For Diddy. She owned the rights to the phrase for a TV show that never got off the ground, so Perry’s lawyers gobbled the trademark up and now it’s anyone’s guess what he’ll do with it. Tyler Perry Presents: Tyler Perry’s WWJD, perhaps?

Kearney is actually saying that she brought the idea of her show to Perry’s studios and that they’re stealing the idea from her, but there wasn’t enough evidence for courts to agree with her. Of course, Perry will have to actually do something with the trademark himself, or someone else can come along and steal the WWJD? from him the way he took it from Kearney.

And, don’t worry. Perry has made it clear he doesn’t have the rights to the name “Jesus”—just the full “What Would Jesus Do?” phrase, and only as it applies to film, television and live performances …
