Watch the New ‘The Color Purple’ Trailer, Starring Halle Bailey and Fantasia Barrino

The Color Purple is coming back to the big screen, and this time it’s a musical.

Oprah Winfrey will return, but this time behind-the-scenes alongside co-producer Steven Spielberg, who directed the original. The cast is comprised of American Idol season 3 winner Fantasia Barrino who stars as Celie, Halle Bailey as young Celie, Danielle Brooks as Sofia, Taraji P. Henson as Shug Avery, Colman Domingo as Mister.

The Color Purple is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel of the same name by Alice Walker, and the 1985 film, and the 2005 Broadway musical. The story follows Celie, a young black woman who is abused by her father and husband, searching for both hope and redemption. She undergoes a journey of faith, writing letters to God, while finding strength and hope through her relationships with her sister Nettie, her friend Shug and her husband’s mistress, Sofia.

The 1985 film adaptation was a critical and commercial success, winning three Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actress for Whoopi Goldberg. The Broadway musical also garnered two Tony wins, so the movie musical has some high expectations.

But from our first look at the trailer, it seems like the latest adaptation could be the best one yet. Not only does the cast have the proven acting chops, but they’ve also got two powerhouse vocalists between Barrino and Bailey, the latter of who is garnering quite a bit of praise for her other movie remake.

The Color Purple will premiere in theaters on Christmas Day.
