Why Are Some People Able to ‘Hear’ This Silent Animated GIF?

Well, this is weird.
An animated GIF, which contains no sound at all, has been making the rounds today because some people claim they actually hear something while watching.
Evidently, for some people, their ears begin to prepare for the shockwave depicted in the loop, and close up—causing an actual sound in your ears.
