Somebody, somewhere is probably very excited to learn that Hollywood has finally greenlit the highly anticipated sequel to 2002’s My Big Fat Greek Wedding. It only stands to reason. Why else would Hollywood be making a sequel for a movie if they weren’t sure that people were dying for it? It couldn’t be because they’re completely out of ideas and are dying to re-bottle decade-old lightning in hopes of compensating for their lack of creative risk-taking and original thought. That’s just nonsense.
In all seriousness, My Big Fat Greek Wedding was a Hollywood game changer in 2002 precisely because it was so innovative. It pulled in $420 million which, at the time, was an incredible amount of money for an indie flick. This is the movie that gave Hollywood confidence that originality could make up for a small budget—confidence which they have evidently lost since then. Certainly, My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 (My Bigger, Fatter Greek-er Wedding, perhaps?) could be a fine movie. But it won’t have that special spark that made the first one click. Opa …
